Marie Curie PhD fellow in Computer Science

3Shape is looking for a Marie Curie PhD fellow interested in pushing the boundaries of rapid biomechanics simulation for personalized clinical design with us. The successful candidate will be enrolled as PhD student in Computer Science at the University of Copenhagen commencing 1 September 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter.

About the position

The 3Shape TRIOS intraoral scanner is a proven technology for creating 3D reconstructions of the teeth and gums. The TRIOS software also provides a static analysis of tooth geometry, such as the distance between opposing teeth that indicates potential areas of abrasion. Recently, it has also become possible to record patient-specific chewing motion with TRIOS. The goal of the Ph.D. project is to create the world’s first mechanics-aware interactive design tool for dental prostheses by fusing spatial-temporal-adaptive interface-tracking meshing methods with 3D geometry and motion data from TRIOS. In the thesis, a contact mechanics solver for real-time performance should be investigated. Depending on discoveries made during the project, other topics may also warrant further investigation.

Project description
You will be working as part of the Rapid Biomechanics Simulation for Personalized Clinical Design (RAINBOW) MSCA European Training Network, awarded by the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme. This network consists of 5 universities, 1 hospital, 8 industrial partners, and will educate a total of 15 PhD students through common dedicated training activities. More details can be found at

Description of the scientific environment

3Shape Medical a/s is a high-tech company employing tens of Ph.D.s and also two former associate professors in their R&D departments. The share of R&D expenditure is much higher than in other companies within the industry. 3Shape Medical has co-operated with universities in several joint research projects, both at national and at EU levels. 3Shape Medical also employs several dentists and dental technicians, ready to give valuable advice and feedback, and has an extensive network to dentists world-wide.

The Image section of the Department of Computer Science, University of Copenhagen hosts experts in image analysis and processing, computer vision, computer simulation, numerical optimization and machine learning. The section offers a research environment with much freedom: to a large extent, you shape the research you work on and the ideas you pursue. The section aspires to be a top research environment that bridges theory and practice. You will be associated with the RAINBOW research team within the Image section. The team will consist of 4 PhDs, 2 Associate Professors and 1 Post Doc.

The RAINBOW network offers many traveling opportunities for training events and extended visits or research stays at other universities within the network.

Job description

The position is available for a 3-year period and your key tasks as a PhD student are:

  • To manage and carry through your research project
  • Attend PhD courses
  • Write scientific articles and your PhD thesis
  • Disseminate your research
  • To stay at an external research institution for a few months, preferably abroad

The successful candidate will be embedded in a R&D team at 3Shape Medical a/s, interacting closely with software developers and researchers, and gaining insight into professional product development. Confidential information thus obtained must not be disclosed, and any material with potential of patentability will be reviewed prior to permitting publication.

Formal requirements
Applicants must hold an MSc degree in Computer Science, Mathematics or related field with outstanding grades. Applicants should possess strong programming skills, strong mathematical background and proficiency in spoken and written English. As criteria for the assessment of your qualifications emphasis will also be laid on awards and honors, previous scientific publications in recognized peer-reviewed venues (if any) and relevant professional qualifications and work experience.  It is an advantage if the candidate has experience with one or more of the following topics:

  • Computational geometry, particularly meshes
  • Mechanics / materials science
  • Simulation and scientific computing
  • 3D scanning
  • Medical software

Because R&D at 3Shape Medical a/s is team work, the candidate must have the necessary social skills. It would be an advantage to be able to demonstrate relevant experience, from academia or also from other contexts, like volunteering or other spare time activities.

Terms of employment

While employment formally will be with 3Shape Medical a/s, the terms of appointment and payment accord to the rules and regulations laid down by European Union’s Horizon 2020 Marie Curie Initial Training Networks. Without prejudice, currently living allowance per month is 4.208 EUR, with an additional monthly mobility allowance of 600 EUR. Also without prejudice, a candidate who moves to Denmark with his/her family is currently entitled to an additional 500 EUR per month. Payments will be in DKK, based on exchange rates at the time of payment.

All intellectual property rights that may follow partly or fully from the Ph.D. student’s work will go to 3Shape Medical a/s.

The appointment is for a period of 36 months. Of this period, the candidate will spend approximately 26 months at 3Shape’s Copenhagen office, 9 months at the University of Copenhagen, and 3 months at another university. The appointment is expected to lead to a PhD dissertation to be submitted to the University of Copenhagen. Since the scholarship is part of the MSCA European Training Network Programme, the candidate must - at the date of recruitment – be an “early stage researcher” (i.e. in the first 4 years of his/her research career and not have a doctoral degree) and cannot have resided in Denmark for more than 12 months in the three years immediately before the recruitment.
